Ruling on Qasr prayer

The general ruling is based on the intention of whether the traveler is intending to stay or not.

If he/she intends to stay, then he/she should observe qasr prayer for up to 4 days and its the opinion of Imam Malik, Imam Shafi’i and Ibn Qudama.

If he/she intend to leave after accomplishing their task, then they are regarded as travelers regardless of how long they stayed and should observe qasr prayer for as long as they stayed. This is backed by the Prophet (peace be upon him) as he stayed in Makkah during the year of the Conquest for 19 days, during which he observed qasr. Also he stayed in Tabuk for 20 days to fight the Christians, and he led his Companions in qasr prayers, because he had not resolved to stay.

So long your name remains a traveler then qasr is permissible.

“And when you (Muslims) travel in the land, there is no sin on you if you shorten As-Salah (the prayer)” [al-Nisa 4:101]
